Injury to feelings awards - updated Vento guidelines

The bands of awards for injury to feelings in discrimination cases, known as the Vento bands, have been updated in respect of claims after 6 April 2026.

Part of the compensation that can be awarded by tribunals for unlawful discrimination are awards for ‘injury to feelings’. This is an award of damages aimed as a remedy for the hurt, humiliation and degradation suffered by the employee and is considered separately from any claim for financial loss such as loss of earnings. Tribunals have a discretion as to what to award but they will take into account these Vento bands.

For claims presented on or after 6 April 2026, the Vento bands are as follows:

  • a lower band of £1,300 to £12,600 (less serious cases)
  • a middle band of £12,600 to £37,700 (cases that do not merit an award in the upper band), and
  • an upper band of £37,700 to £62,900 (the most serious cases), with the most exceptional cases capable of exceeding £62,900
