Pay data: for three months to April 2018

The upturn in pay settlements, evident from the start of 2018, shows little sign of abating.

  • XpertHR shows that the median basic pay award in the three months to April 2018 was 2.5% (the fourth consecutive rolling quarter at which it’s recorded this figure), with the interquartile range worth between 2% and 3%. Almost two-thirds of awards were higher than the same employees received at their previous review. Pay awards in the manufacturing-and-production sector have risen to 2.9% in the latest rolling quarter, their highest level since April 2012.
  • The Labour Research Department’s Payline shows the median standard increase at 3% for the three months to April.
  • Manufacturing wages have accelerated according to the Engineering Employers Federation, with average increases standing at 2.6%, the highest April figure since 2008.

Recent CIPD research also points to increased basic pay expectations. With the relaxation of the pay cap in the public sector, when these awards filter through the average/median figures are likely to increase further.
