Tribunal claims increase
There has been a marked rise in the number of employment tribunal claims being lodged.
According to Ministry of Justice figures, single tribunal claims increased by 165% compared with the same quarter in 2017.
While the number of individual claims hasn’t yet returned to pre-fee regime levels, the increase is significant, with knock-on effects for the tribunal system. For single claims, the outstanding tribunal caseload rose by 130%. The MoJ is in the process of recruiting more judges which, in the longer term, will reduce the backlog.
In terms of awards, disability discrimination claims attracted the highest compensation pay outs, with an average award of £30,700. Religious discrimination claims had the lowest average award (£5,100). The average award for unfair dismissal awards was £15,007.
